The Art of Caring for 92.5 Silver
Sterling silver is a living precious metal. With thoughtful wear, proper storage, and simple rituals, your Aajiva pieces will retain their mirror brilliance for generations.
Why Does Silver Tarnish?
Pure elemental silver (99.9%) is too soft for durable fine jewellery. Therefore, 92.5 Sterling Silver is created by alloying 92.5% pure silver with 7.5% strengthening alloys (primarily pure copper).
When silver comes into contact with trace amounts of sulfur in the atmosphere, a microscopic chemical reaction forms silver sulfide on the outer surface — what we colloquially call "tarnish."
Tarnish is NOT rust, and it is NOT permanent damage. It is a superficial chemical layer that is 100% reversible. In fact, tarnishing is scientific proof that your jewellery is made of real, authentic silver!
Aajiva's Dual-Barrier Defense
To spare you the chore of frequent polishing, every Aajiva silver creation receives a double protective finish:
- 1. High-Purity Rhodium Micro-Plate: Provides a platinum-like luminous white shine that resists oxidation.
- 2. Nano E-Coating Sealant: An invisible organic electro-deposition layer that seals the metal against ambient moisture and sweat.
The "Last On, First Off" Rule
Jewellery should be the finishing touch before stepping out, and the first piece removed upon coming home.
The Best Practices
- Store in Airtight Pouches: Keep your jewellery in the complimentary zip-lock pouch and velvet box provided with your Aajiva order to isolate it from airborne sulfur.
- Wear Frequently: Believe it or not, wearing your silver actually prevents tarnish! The natural oils in your skin create a protective sheen.
- Wipe with Soft Cloth: Gently buff with your complimentary Aajiva micro-suede polishing cloth after every wear to remove body oils and moisture.
- Keep Dry: Remove rings before washing dishes, swimming in chlorinated pools, or soaking in hot mineral baths.
Things to Avoid
- No Direct Perfumes or Sprays: Never spray perfumes, hairsprays, or body mists directly onto silver. The alcohol and propellants degrade protective e-coatings.
- Avoid Harsh Abrasives: Do not use gritty toothpaste or baking soda pastes on high-polish zirconia pieces; they create micro-scratches on delicate prongs.
- No Humid Bathroom Cabinets: Never store your precious jewellery on open bathroom shelves where hot shower steam accelerates chemical oxidation.
- Never Dip Gemstones in Acid: Chemical liquid silver dips are too aggressive and will erode gemstone settings and oxidised detailing.
How to Clean Your Silver at Home
Follow our gentle 3-step masterclass to safely restore sparkle in under 5 minutes.
The Lukewarm Bath
Fill a small glass bowl with lukewarm water and add 2–3 drops of mild, pH-neutral baby shampoo or dish soap. Submerge your silver piece for 3 to 5 minutes to loosen accumulated dust.
Gentle Feather Buffing
Use an ultra-soft baby toothbrush or your fingertips to gently brush around prongs and gemstone undersides. Never scrub with force. Rinse thoroughly with clean lukewarm water.
Pat Dry & Polish
Pat completely dry using a lint-free cotton cloth. Finish by buffing with your Aajiva micro-suede polishing cloth in gentle back-and-forth strokes until the mirror reflection returns.
